Inner Listening

We are so used to seeing with our eyes and hearing with our ears that we never awaken our inner perceptions. In this exercise, you'll see how simple it is to see, feel and hear things from inside your body. Inner Listening is designed to awaken your inner sight (clairvoyance), your inner hearing (clairaudience), and your inner knowing (clairsentience). Most of the time, these senses are working unconsciously. This exercise lets us access these senses to make conscious observations.

You can do this exercise lying down, sitting comfortably, or standing up. Experiment by moving to different rooms and changing your position. In fact, the best way to do this exercise is to do it in unfamiliar places like hotel rooms, friends' apartments, your family's yard. That way you'll always be observing new things and you will never be on automatic pilot. The more you experiment, the more you'll learn. Begin by closing your eyes and breathing deeply from your belly. Focus on your breathing and feel it as the force of life. Feel this from inside your body and inside your head. Feel your belly rise and fall; feel your lungs expand and contract.

When you are comfortable, bring your attention to the outside of your body. Slowly explore your body's entire surface. Feel the pressure of your body on the couch; feel your clothing on your legs; feel the air on your face and the light on your closed eyes. Note your perceptions.

When you are finished, shift your awareness to the environment just outside your body. Observe the space directly behind your body, in front of your body, on each side of you, above and underneath. As you see, feel and hear the different areas around your body, what are your impressions? Are certain areas expansive? Light? Thick? I do this by feeling as though I have a million tiny eyes all over my skin. When I want to observe a particular area around me, I open the little eyes that correspond with that part of my skin. After you do this a couple of times, you'll know what works best for you.

Now for the fun part. When you are ready, extend your awareness to the whole room around you. Feel the walls, the windows, the doors, the ceiling. As you slowly examine the room with your inner senses, what do you observe? Do you see the walls? Does a doorway feel different from a window? When your inner senses are developed, you can feel the difference between the two. You don't have to be some psychic genius, just in possession of some concentration and courage.

For the first few times you do this, end here. Then, once you are adept at it and your inner awareness is active and itching to get out of the house, take it for a walk. Expand into the hallway and out the window, through the ceiling and the floor. What do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear beyond the four walls? Don't worry about being right or wrong and don't expect to always observe concrete things. Much of your perception will be subtle.
